The initiation of outpatient continuous nerve block infusion is the service rendered to prepare outpatients for discharge from hospital after the patient has had an insertion of a percutaneous nerve block catheter for continuous infusion analgesia or for outpatient palliative epidural infusion. The service includes an assessment of the patient and all procedures required to prepare the infusion, the infusion of medications and education or counselling of the patient, patient's relative(s), patient representative or other caregiver(s).
When to Use
- Use G063 when discharging a patient with a percutaneous nerve block catheter for continuous analgesia, provided the patient is not currently admitted as an inpatient.
- Use this code for the initiation of an outpatient palliative epidural infusion where the patient is being transitioned to home-based management.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G063 for an inpatient is a direct violation of the Schedule of Benefits, as the service is bundled into the G247 daily management fee.
- Attempting to bill G063 in addition to the initial catheter insertion procedure code is often flagged as an unbundling error if the documentation does not clearly separate the initiation of the infusion from the surgical placement.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation explicitly records the education provided to the caregiver or patient regarding the infusion pump, as this is a mandatory component of the service definition for G063.
