Serial oral or parenteral provocation testing to a food, drug or other substance when the service is rendered in a hospital, when an anaphylactic reaction is considered likely based on a documented history and the service is performed under direct and ongoing physician attendance.
When to Use
- Use G190 when performing hospital-based drug or food challenges for patients with a high clinical probability of anaphylaxis requiring direct, continuous physician supervision.
- Select G190 instead of G208 when the procedure is performed in a hospital setting rather than an office setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G190 when the patient does not have a documented history of high-risk anaphylaxis, as this is a specific requirement for the code.
- Attempting to bill G190 alongside G208 for the same patient encounter, as these codes are mutually exclusive.
