G223
G223 – Somatic or peripheral nerves not specifically listed - additional nerve(s) or site(s)
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for the injection of an additional somatic or peripheral nerve or site not specifically listed in the Schedule. It is an add-on code and is claimed for each additional nerve or site after the first one, which is claimed using G231.
When to Use
- Use G223 when injecting a second distinct peripheral nerve site during the same session where the primary site was billed under G231.
- Apply this code for bilateral procedures where the first side is billed as G231 and the second side is billed as G223.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G223 as a standalone code will result in an automatic rejection, as it requires G231 to be present on the same claim.
- Attempting to bill multiple units of G223 for the same anatomical site is considered unbundling and will be flagged during audits.
- Claiming G223 for trigger point injections (G372) or joint injections (G373) is an incorrect use of the code and will lead to recovery.
Billing Tips
- Always ensure the primary procedure G231 is billed first to establish the base for the add-on G223 units.
- Clearly document the anatomical location of each additional site in the patient chart to justify the multiple units of G223 claimed.
