G231
G231 – Somatic or peripheral nerves not specifically listed - one nerve or site
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is a percutaneous injection for a nerve block of a single somatic or peripheral nerve or site that is not specifically described by another code in the Schedule. For blocking additional nerves or sites during the same session, see G223.
When to Use
- Use G231 for a single percutaneous diagnostic or therapeutic block of a peripheral nerve not covered by specific codes, such as a supraorbital or lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block.
- Use G231 for a single trigger point or localized somatic nerve injection when the clinical intent is a peripheral nerve block rather than a simple musculoskeletal injection.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill G231 for multiple sites in one session; use G223 for each additional nerve or site blocked beyond the first.
- Avoid billing G231 for post-operative pain management if you performed the primary surgery, as this is considered inclusive of the surgical procedure fee.
- Do not attempt to attach After Hours Procedure Premiums (E409, E410, E412, E413) to G231, as it is not recognized as a Major Invasive Procedure on GP104.
Billing Tips
- If you utilize alcohol or sclerosing agents during the procedure, ensure you append the E958 premium to increase the G231 fee by 50%.
