G226Sciatic nerve - bilateral

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This procedure is a bilateral percutaneous injection of the sciatic nerves for therapeutic purposes. This service is for blocking both sciatic nerves in a single session. It is the bilateral equivalent of G230 (unilateral sciatic nerve block).

When to Use

  • Use G226 when performing a bilateral therapeutic sciatic nerve block for chronic pain management in a single session, rather than billing G230 twice.
  • Use this code for bilateral diagnostic nerve blocks intended to confirm the sciatic nerve as the primary pain generator.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G226 in addition to a surgical procedure performed by the same physician on the same patient, which is disallowed under the payment adjustment rules.
  • Attempting to claim age-based premiums (e.g., A007) with G226, which will result in a rejection as this code is not on the eligible list in GP64.
  • Incorrectly billing G226 for post-operative pain management, which must be billed under G224 instead.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the clinical record explicitly documents the bilateral nature of the procedure to justify the use of G226 over the unilateral G230.
