G230Sciatic nerve - unilateral

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

A percutaneous unilateral block of the sciatic nerve. This service is listed under the "Nerve Blocks - Peripheral/Other Injections" subsection of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures section of the Schedule.

When to Use

  • Use G230 for a diagnostic or therapeutic unilateral sciatic nerve block performed for chronic pain management or localized anesthesia.
  • Select G230 when performing a peripheral nerve block specifically targeting the sciatic nerve, as opposed to a broader plexus block or a different peripheral nerve such as the femoral nerve (G226).

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G230 in conjunction with ultrasound or nerve stimulation guidance will result in a rejection or recovery, as these are considered inclusive to the procedure fee.
  • Attempting to bill a separate tray fee or local anesthetic agent is prohibited, as these costs are bundled into the G230 fee per GP100/GP101.
  • Submitting G230 for bilateral procedures without appropriate manual review or modifier usage often triggers audit flags; ensure clinical documentation clearly supports the medical necessity of unilateral versus bilateral intervention.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the clinical note explicitly identifies the sciatic nerve as the target to distinguish it from other peripheral nerve blocks like G226, which may carry different clinical indications.
