G248Caudal, single injection

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Performs a single injection for a caudal nerve block. This service is classified as a neuraxial procedure for acute pain management. See the 'Nerve Blocks for Acute Pain Management' section of the Schedule of Benefits on page ().

When to Use

  • Use G248 when performing a single-injection caudal block specifically for acute pain management.
  • Use G248 for therapeutic caudal injections in the acute setting, distinguishing it from chronic pain management codes which fall under different fee schedules.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G248 in conjunction with a primary surgical procedure performed by the same physician; the block is considered part of the global surgical fee unless it is for post-operative pain control exceeding 4 hours.
  • Attempting to bill G248 alongside G224; G224 is specifically for post-operative pain control blocks, and billing both for the same site will result in a rejection for duplicate service.
  • Failing to apply the correct after-hours premium (E409-E413) when the procedure is non-elective and performed outside standard hours, as G248 is explicitly listed as a major invasive procedure eligible for these premiums.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure that if an anaesthesiologist is involved for sedation during the block, you bill E030C or E031C appropriately, as G248 does not include the fee for procedural sedation.
