G256Superior laryngeal nerve block

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

A diagnostic and therapeutic procedure involving the injection of the superior laryngeal nerve. This service includes all common elements of an insured service as defined in the Schedule of Benefits (see , ).

When to Use

  • Use G256 for the diagnostic or therapeutic management of laryngeal pain or sensory dysfunction when the procedure is performed as a standalone service.
  • Select G256 when performing a targeted superior laryngeal nerve block for patients with refractory cough or laryngeal hypersensitivity syndromes.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G256 in conjunction with a primary surgical procedure performed by the same physician will result in a rejection, as the block is considered part of the surgical fee.
  • Failure to append E958 when using sclerosing agents will result in a 50% underpayment of the procedure fee.
  • Attempting to bill G256 alongside Z432C for anaesthesia support is prohibited; use E030C or E031C if sedation is required by a second physician.

Billing Tips

  • Always pair G256 with an appropriate A-prefix assessment code when the service is non-elective to trigger eligibility for Special Visit Premiums.
  • Ensure documentation clearly distinguishes the nerve block as a distinct therapeutic intervention rather than an incidental component of a larger surgical procedure to avoid audit scrutiny.
