G483 – Therapeutic venisection
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Therapeutic venisection, also known as therapeutic phlebotomy, is the medically indicated withdrawal of a quantity of blood from a vein for the treatment of certain medical conditions. It is listed under the Cardiovascular subsection of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures.
When to Use
- Use G483 for patients with hereditary hemochromatosis requiring routine therapeutic phlebotomy to manage iron overload.
- Use G483 for patients with polycythemia vera requiring blood volume reduction to maintain hematocrit levels within target ranges.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill G483 for routine diagnostic blood draws or venipuncture; these are considered part of the office overhead and are not separately billable.
- Avoid billing G483 in conjunction with a consultation or assessment code (e.g., A007) on the same day unless a separate, distinct clinical issue is addressed and documented.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the medical necessity for the therapeutic procedure is clearly documented in the chart to justify the claim during potential post-payment audits.
- If the procedure is performed in an emergency or hospital setting, remember to append the appropriate Special Visit Premium to the G483 base fee to maximize reimbursement.
