When to Use

  • Use G498 when performing a formal intravenous glucose tolerance test to evaluate insulin sensitivity or suspected endocrine disorders.
  • Select G498 over G499 when the procedure specifically involves the intravenous administration of glucose rather than an oral glucose tolerance test.

Common Pitfalls

  • Claiming G498 alongside other diagnostic endocrine procedures without ensuring the clinical documentation supports the necessity of the intravenous route.
  • Failing to recognize that G498 is a low-value diagnostic code that does not include the professional fee for an associated consultation or assessment.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the procedure is clearly distinguished from G490 or G513 in your records to avoid audit triggers regarding the specific diagnostic protocol utilized.
