G517 – Ankle pressure determination
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
G517 is a diagnostic procedure under the non-invasive cardiography category for a unilateral or bilateral blood flow study (Doppler or other) for ankle pressure determination. The service explicitly includes the calculation of the ankle-arm index systolic pressure ratio.
When to Use
- Use G517 when performing a formal Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) assessment using a handheld Doppler to evaluate suspected peripheral arterial disease in an office setting.
- Bill G517 for the objective measurement of systolic pressures in the lower extremities when clinical findings suggest claudication or non-healing ulcers.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill G517 in conjunction with J200, as the Ministry considers these services mutually exclusive for the same patient encounter.
- Avoid billing G517 during a surgical episode or while the patient is admitted for post-operative hospital care, as it is considered bundled into the surgical fee.
- Do not attempt to bill G517 as an add-on to a general assessment (A007/A001) if the documentation does not specifically support the performance of the Doppler pressure study.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the calculated ankle-arm systolic pressure ratio is explicitly documented in the patient chart to satisfy audit requirements for the procedure.
- Since G517 is a low-value diagnostic code, ensure it is billed only when the Doppler equipment is utilized, as it is not intended to cover basic palpation of pedal pulses.
