G542 – Radiotelemetry or portable recordings - technical component
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is the technical component for radiotelemetry or portable recordings to monitor spontaneous EEG from a freely moving patient. It is claimed in addition to routine EEG fees. The corresponding professional component is claimed under billing code G546.
When to Use
- Use G542 when providing the technical setup and data acquisition for ambulatory EEG monitoring in a freely moving patient, distinct from a standard stationary EEG (G540).
- Claim G542 alongside the professional interpretation code G546 when the technical equipment and monitoring process are managed by your office or facility.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G542 without an accompanying routine EEG fee code, as G542 is strictly an add-on technical component and not a standalone diagnostic service.
- Failing to apply the 86.10% payment adjustment rule when the technical component is performed within a hospital setting, which will result in an automatic claim rejection or audit recovery.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation explicitly distinguishes the technical data acquisition process from the professional interpretation (G546) to satisfy the quality assurance requirements outlined in GP11.
