G544
G544 – Polygraphic recording - technical component
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Polygraphic recording of parameters in addition to EEG (such as respiration, eye movement, EKG, muscle movements, etc.). This fee is for the technical component, per item. Note: G544 is limited to a maximum of 3. [Commentary: Examples of physiological parameters include ECG, respirations, EMG, extra-ocular movements, oxygen saturation, and temperature.]
When to Use
- Use G544 to bill for the technical setup of individual physiological parameters like EKG, EMG, or respiratory monitoring when performed in conjunction with an EEG study.
- Apply this code when capturing distinct physiological data streams that are not already bundled into the primary EEG technical fee (G540).
- Utilize this code for each discrete parameter monitored, up to the maximum limit of three, during a comprehensive polygraphic recording session.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing more than three units of G544 per patient encounter will result in automatic rejection by the Ministry as the code is strictly capped.
- Attempting to bill G544 for parameters that are already considered inherent components of the primary diagnostic procedure (such as standard EKG leads during a routine EEG) may be flagged as unbundling.
- Failing to apply the 86.10% payment adjustment when the service is rendered within a hospital setting will lead to incorrect claim submissions.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation clearly itemizes the specific physiological parameters recorded to justify each unit of G544 claimed, as these are subject to audit verification.
