G551
G551 – Katzman test (subarachnoid infusion test)
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Katzman test (subarachnoid infusion test) including lumbar puncture
When to Use
- Use G551 when performing a formal subarachnoid infusion test to assess cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, specifically for suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus.
- Use this code to capture the entire procedure, as it explicitly includes the lumbar puncture component required to access the subarachnoid space.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z804 (lumbar puncture) in addition to G551, as the Ministry considers the lumbar puncture an inclusive component of the Katzman test fee.
- Avoid billing G551 for a standard diagnostic lumbar puncture performed for meningitis or MS workup, as G551 is specific to the infusion test protocol.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your clinical notes explicitly document the infusion parameters and pressure measurements to justify the use of G551 over a standard Z804 diagnostic tap.
