Tonography (to include tonometry) with or without water - technical component. As per , the technical component of a diagnostic procedure is only eligible for payment where: 1. the physician has the necessary training and experience to personally render the technical component of the service; and 2. the physician maintains documentation that describes the process by which the physician monitors quality assurance in accordance with professional standards.
When to Use
- Use G856 when you perform the technical component of tonography in your office setting, distinct from the professional interpretation component.
- Select G856 when the procedure involves tonometry with or without water provocation, provided you maintain the required quality assurance documentation.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G856 in a hospital setting without using the G856A suffix, which results in an automatic payment adjustment error.
- Claiming G856 alongside G433 for the same patient encounter without clearly distinguishing the technical component from the professional consultation or assessment.
