H987Additional person(s) seen

OHIP Obstetrics Code — GENERAL PREAMBLE · Schedule of Benefits

This is a special visit premium for an additional person seen by an Emergency Department Physician during a non-elective visit to an Emergency Department. This premium is applicable when the service for the additional patient commences at night, between 00:00h and 07:00h. An Emergency Department Physician is defined on as a physician working a scheduled shift or on-call for the ED who is requested to attend when not already at the hospital. This premium is payable only when the physician is required to travel to the hospital for the special visit and must be claimed with an appropriate A-prefix assessment fee.

When to Use

  • Use H987 when you are called back to the hospital between 00:00 and 07:00 to assess a second or subsequent patient in the ED after already attending to the first patient.
  • Apply this code when you have already triggered a primary special visit premium (such as H984 or H985) for the first patient and are required to see additional patients during the same call-back event.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing H987 for patients seen during a routine, scheduled ED shift; it is strictly for call-backs where you must travel to the hospital specifically for the patient.
  • Failing to document the exact time of the request to attend, which is a mandatory requirement for all Table V special visit premiums.
  • Attempting to claim H987 for multiple patients simultaneously without clear documentation that each patient required a separate, distinct assessment upon your arrival.

Billing Tips

  • Always pair H987 with the appropriate A-prefix assessment code (e.g., A007) and ensure the primary special visit premium (H984/H985) is billed for the first patient to establish the call-back event.
