J023 – Intra-arterial infusion of drugs
OHIP Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Code — CLINICAL PROCEDURES ASSOCIATED WITH DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS · Schedule of Benefits
J023 is a per diem supervision fee for the intra-arterial infusion of drugs (e.g., for control of gastrointestinal haemorrhage). It must be claimed in addition to the appropriate angiographic procedural and radiological fees. This fee covers the physician's daily management and supervision of the infusion.
When to Use
- Use J023 for the daily management and supervision of an intra-arterial infusion, such as vasopressin for a gastrointestinal bleed, following the initial angiographic placement.
- Claim this code for each day the infusion is actively maintained and supervised by the physician after the initial procedure day.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not attempt to claim special visit premiums (e.g., A900 series) with J023, as it is classified as a per diem supervision fee rather than a discrete non-elective visit.
- Avoid claiming after-hours procedure premiums like E409 or E410, as J023 is not recognized as an eligible major invasive procedure under the Schedule of Benefits.
Billing Tips
- Ensure J023 is billed in conjunction with the appropriate initial angiographic procedural codes to establish the clinical necessity of the ongoing infusion.
