Performs a carotid angiogram via direct puncture of the carotid artery. This procedure is eligible for age-based fee premiums for patients under 16 years of age (see ), after-hours procedure premiums (E409, E410, E412, E413) for non-elective services (), and special visit premiums for non-elective diagnostic services rendered in a hospital ().
When to Use
- Use J031 specifically for a carotid angiogram performed via direct percutaneous puncture of the carotid artery.
- Use this code for non-elective diagnostic procedures performed in a hospital setting where urgent management is required.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill J031 for procedures performed via femoral or other remote arterial access, as these require different procedural codes.
- Avoid billing J031 for elective procedures, as the after-hours and special visit premiums are strictly restricted to non-elective services.
Billing Tips
