J894 – Maintenance of wakefulness test
OHIP Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (J894) is a daytime diagnostic sleep study. It is comprised of a technical component (H Fee) and a professional component (P Fee). Payment for this service is contingent upon the recording containing sufficient information for a diagnostic interpretation as determined in accordance with CPSO Standards. See billing interaction rules for limitations and co-billing restrictions.
When to Use
- Use J894 to assess a patient's ability to remain awake in a controlled environment, specifically when evaluating excessive daytime sleepiness for occupational safety or treatment efficacy.
- Select J894 when the clinical objective is to measure wakefulness rather than sleep latency, distinguishing it from the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (J893).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J894 on the same day as J893 will result in an automatic rejection, as these tests are mutually exclusive for same-day billing.
- Submitting J894 without separating the technical (J894B) and professional (J894C) components will lead to claim processing errors.
- Attempting to bill any EEG service (e.g., G414, G415, G418) on the same day as J894 is prohibited and will trigger a rejection.
Billing Tips
- Always append the suffix B for the technical component and C for the professional component to ensure the claim is processed correctly under the split-billing requirement.
- Ensure your documentation explicitly meets CPSO standards for diagnostic sufficiency, as any recording deemed inadequate for interpretation renders the entire service ineligible for payment.
