Diagnostic interview and/or counselling with child and/or parent for psychological problem or learning disabilities. General Rules for Interviews This service is subject to the rules for Interviews as defined in the Schedule of Benefits. It is not eligible for payment when the information being obtained is part of the history normally included in a consultation or assessment of the patient. The interview must be a booked, separate appointment lasting at least 20 minutes. The service must be rendered personally by the attending physician. Time Units Payment is based on time units of ½ hour or major part thereof. The minimum time for one unit is 20 minutes of direct contact with the patient/parent. For a full breakdown of time units, refer to the General Preamble (). Note: K008 is claimed using the child's health number. Psychological testing is not an insured service.
When to Use
- Use K008 for a dedicated 20+ minute session with a parent to discuss behavioral management strategies for a child's diagnosed ADHD or anxiety.
- Use K008 when conducting a diagnostic interview with a child to explore learning disability symptoms that are distinct from a standard physical examination or routine office visit.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing K008 on the same day as a standard office visit (A007) for the same issue is often flagged; ensure the K008 is a distinct, booked appointment for psychological/learning issues.
- Claiming K008 for time spent on administrative tasks or reviewing school reports without the parent or child present is ineligible, as the code requires direct contact.
- Submitting K008 for psychological testing or formal psychometric assessments, which are strictly non-insured services under OHIP.
Billing Tips
- Always document the start and end times in the clinical note to justify the 20-minute minimum requirement, as this is the primary focus of post-payment audits.
- Unlike K002 or K003, K008 is uniquely permitted on the same day as other counselling services, provided the clinical documentation clearly distinguishes the separate nature of the psychological interview.
