Group psychotherapy for 2 people, per member. This service includes narcoanalysis or psychoanalysis or treatment of sexual dysfunction. When to Use
- Use K019 when conducting a structured psychotherapy session for exactly two patients simultaneously, such as couples therapy or two family members with distinct treatment plans.
- Use this code for time-based psychotherapy sessions lasting at least 20 minutes, where the session is specifically focused on the treatment of sexual dysfunction or psychoanalysis.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing K019 for a session lasting less than 20 minutes is a common audit trigger; such sessions should be billed as a standard office visit (e.g., A007) rather than psychotherapy.
- Claiming K019 alongside a consultation or assessment (e.g., A005) on the same day is prohibited unless you document two clearly distinct diagnoses for the two separate services.
- Failing to record the exact start and end times in the patient's chart is a frequent cause of clawbacks, as the Ministry requires precise time-keeping for all time-based psychotherapy codes.
Billing Tips
- Ensure you bill one unit of K019 per patient per 30-minute block; if the session exceeds 45 minutes, you may be eligible to bill additional units if the time requirements are met.
