A group psychotherapy session for 5 people. The fee is payable per member. Psychotherapy is a form of treatment for mental illness, behavioural maladaptations, and/or other problems that are assumed to be of an emotional nature. A physician deliberately establishes a professional relationship with the patients to remove, modify, or retard existing symptoms, attenuate or reverse disturbed patterns of behaviour, and promote positive personality growth. This service is calculated in time units of 30 minutes, with specific minimum time requirements for billing. Includes narcoanalysis or psychoanalysis or treatment of sexual dysfunction. When to Use
- Use K024 when facilitating a structured psychotherapy session for exactly five patients where the primary goal is the modification of emotional symptoms or behavioural patterns.
- Use this code for group-based treatment of sexual dysfunction or psychoanalysis when the group size is exactly five participants.
Common Pitfalls
- Failing to maintain a separate, non-medical record containing the names and health numbers of all five attendees will result in a full clawback during an audit.
- Submitting the claim under the wrong patient's health number; you must use the health number of the participant who has accumulated the highest number of counselling units with you during the current calendar year.
- Billing K024 on the same day as a consultation or assessment for the same patient without documenting a distinct, unrelated diagnosis for each service.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation clearly reflects the 30-minute time unit requirement, as K024 is defined by these specific time increments per the General Preamble.
- If you qualify for the Focused Practice Psychotherapy Premium, ensure your billing software is configured to automatically apply the 17% increase to K024 to maximize revenue.

Psychotherapy, Psychiatric and Counselling Services
The physician must maintain a separate record (independent of the patient's medical record) of the names and health numbers of all persons in attendance at each group counselling session or the service is not eligible for payment.
Psychotherapy outside hospital and hypnotherapy may not be claimed as such when provided in conjunction with a consultation or other assessments rendered by a physician during the same patient visit unless there are clearly defined different diagnoses for the two services. Unit means ½ hour or major part thereof - see General Preamble , to for definitions and time-keeping requirements.
