A multidisciplinary cancer conference (MCC) is a service conducted for the purpose of discussing and directing the management of one or more cancer patients where the physician is in attendance either in person, by telephone or videoconference as a participant or chairperson in accordance with the defined roles and minimum standards established by Ontario Health. When to Use
- Use K708 when you are a participant in a formal MCC meeting discussing a patient's cancer management plan, provided you are not the chairperson or the primary presenter.
- Use this code when you attend a multidisciplinary review for a cancer patient via teleconference or videoconference, ensuring you meet the minimum time requirements per patient as defined by Ontario Health.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing K708 alongside any other insured service rendered on the same day for the same patient will result in a rejection, as the MCC fee is intended to be all-inclusive for that encounter.
- Submitting K708 when you are also claiming K709, K710, or K711 for the same patient on the same day will trigger an automatic rejection due to the mutual exclusivity of these codes.
- Failing to document the total duration of the conference and the specific management decisions reached for each patient often leads to audit recovery, as these are mandatory requirements under Section A29.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation explicitly lists all other physician participants and the specific cancer diagnosis being managed to satisfy the audit requirements for MCC claims.
- If the total conference time does not meet the minimum threshold for the number of patients discussed, the Ministry will prorate your claims; ensure your internal logs clearly track the time spent per patient to reconcile these adjustments.
