When to Use
- Use L319 for the collection of a specimen for a Pap smear when performed as a standalone service or in conjunction with an office visit.
- Use this code when you are performing the cervical cytology screening procedure itself, distinct from the physical examination component covered by an A007 or A001.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L319 on the same day as a comprehensive gynecological examination that already includes the specimen collection in the global fee can lead to rejection for duplicate service.
- Failing to include the required diagnostic code for screening or follow-up will result in an automatic rejection by the Ministry.
Billing Tips
- You may bill L319 in addition to an office visit code (A007) if the Pap smear is the primary reason for the encounter or performed as a medically necessary screening.
