When to Use
- Use L471 for the technical component of a complete blood count (CBC) when performed in a physician's office laboratory.
- Apply this code when billing for the automated hematology analysis of a blood sample that includes hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell count, white cell count, and platelet count.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L471 in conjunction with L047, as the latter is a more comprehensive code that already includes the components of a CBC.
- Avoid billing L471 if the laboratory analysis was performed at an external hospital or community lab, as the technical fee belongs to the facility, not the physician.
