When to Use
- Use L473 for the collection of a cervical smear when performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with a visit where the primary purpose is the screening itself.
- Bill L473 when performing a Pap test for a patient who is not eligible for the specific preventive care bonuses associated with Q007 or Q011.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L473 in addition to a comprehensive assessment code like A007, as the procedure is considered included in the global fee of the assessment.
- Avoid billing L473 if the cervical smear is performed during a visit where a minor assessment (A001) is billed, as the Ministry considers the collection part of the visit overhead.
