When to Use
- Use L490 when performing a routine venipuncture for blood collection that is not part of a more comprehensive procedure code.
- Bill L490 when the physician or staff collects a blood specimen for laboratory analysis during an office visit where no other procedural fee is claimed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L490 in addition to a visit fee (A007, A001) as the collection of blood is considered an integral part of the office assessment.
- Avoid billing L490 if the blood collection is performed by a laboratory technician in a separate facility, as the fee is intended for the physician's office overhead.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that L490 is only claimed when the blood collection is the primary reason for the patient's attendance or when it is the only service provided during that specific encounter.
