M082 – Laryngofissure
OHIP Ophthalmology Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Laryngofissure is an operative procedure on the larynx. Per the Schedule of Benefits, the fee for this service includes the associated laryngoscopy. As a surgical procedure, it also includes pre-operative and post-operative care as outlined in the Surgical Preamble ().
When to Use
- Use M082 for an open surgical approach to the larynx, such as for the removal of a laryngeal web or repair of laryngeal stenosis.
- Use this code when the procedure requires a formal laryngofissure (thyrotomy) to gain access to the endolaryngeal structures.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill a separate laryngoscopy code (e.g., E882, E883) alongside M082, as the Schedule of Benefits explicitly includes the laryngoscopy within the M082 fee.
- Avoid billing M082 for endoscopic procedures; if the procedure is performed entirely endoscopically, use the appropriate endoscopic laryngeal surgery codes instead.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly details the open thyrotomy to support the use of M082 over less invasive endoscopic alternatives.
- If performing multiple procedures during the same operative session, apply the 85% reduction rule for secondary procedures as per the Surgical Preamble.
