M083
M083 – Intranasal ethmoidectomy
OHIP Ophthalmology Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Intranasal ethmoidectomy including maxillary antrostomy, performed unilaterally using an endoscope. This procedure includes the maxillary antrostomy component. For a bilateral procedure, use add-on code E844. Use of a 3D CT/MRI image-guided system may be claimed with add-on code E845 if specific conditions are met (see add-on code details).
When to Use
- Use M083 for a unilateral intranasal ethmoidectomy where the maxillary antrostomy is performed as an integral part of the procedure.
- Use M083 in conjunction with E844 when the ethmoidectomy and maxillary antrostomy are performed bilaterally during the same operative session.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill M083 with M061 or M054, as these are restricted codes and will result in automatic claim rejection.
- Claiming E845 without explicit documentation of the anatomical distortion or proximity to critical structures (base of skull, orbit, optic nerve, or carotid artery) will trigger an audit or rejection.
- Attempting to bill a separate maxillary antrostomy code is redundant, as the fee for M083 already includes this component.
Billing Tips
- Always append E844 to the M083 claim when performing the procedure bilaterally to ensure the additional $200 flat fee is captured.
- Ensure the specific clinical criteria for E845 (e.g., ISS score or specific anatomical proximity) are clearly documented in the operative report to support the image-guided system surcharge.
