N525 – Artificial disc insertion (approach by separate surgeon)
OHIP Otolaryngology Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Performs an artificial disc insertion where the approach is conducted by a separate surgeon. Payment for this service requires the use of suffix A. Surgical assistant services (suffix B) are valued at 10 base units plus time units. Anaesthesia services (suffix C) are valued at 15 base units plus time units. For each additional level replaced, use add-on code E394. No other services from the Spinal Surgical Procedures section are payable with N525, except for E394.
When to Use
- Use N525 with suffix A when you are the primary surgeon performing the artificial disc insertion, specifically when a separate surgeon is responsible for the surgical approach.
- Use N525 in conjunction with E394 when performing a multi-level artificial disc replacement procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing any other procedure from the Spinal Surgical Procedures section (Z-code category) on the same day as N525 will result in a rejection, as only E394 is permitted.
- Failure to append suffix A to N525 will result in a claim rejection, as the Ministry requires this to identify the specific nature of the surgical team arrangement.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that the surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthesiologist (suffix C) claims are linked to the primary N525 claim to ensure proper processing of their respective base and time units.
