N531 – Removal of any stimulation pack or electrode
OHIP Otolaryngology Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Removal of any stimulation pack or electrode. This surgical procedure has an assistant fee based on 6 base units plus time units, and an anaesthesia fee based on 7 base units plus time units. Note: N531 is not eligible for payment when rendered with any other services in the Spinal Surgical Procedures section.
When to Use
- Use N531 for the standalone removal of a spinal cord stimulator lead or pulse generator when no other spinal surgical procedure is performed.
- Use this code when revising a system that requires the removal of an existing electrode or pack without the concurrent implantation of a new device.
Common Pitfalls
- N531 is strictly non-payable if billed alongside any other code from the Spinal Surgical Procedures section, leading to automatic rejection.
- Attempting to bill N531 with a primary spinal procedure (e.g., laminectomy or fusion) will result in a claim denial as it is considered inclusive to the primary surgery.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure is documented as a distinct removal; if the removal is part of a larger spinal surgery, the removal is considered part of the global fee for that procedure.
