Partial or total removal of one or more intradural extramedullary spinal tumours. The fee for the surgeon (N560A) is a set amount. The fees for the surgical assistant (N560B) and anaesthetist (N560C) are calculated based on basic units plus time units as detailed in the Schedule. See the unit-based information section for details on assistant and anaesthesia units.
When to Use
- Use N560 for the surgical excision of intradural extramedullary lesions such as meningiomas or schwannomas where the dura is opened and the tumor is removed from the spinal canal.
- Select N560 when performing a partial or total resection of an intradural extramedullary tumor, ensuring it is not billed alongside N561 for the same spinal level.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill N560 in combination with N561 will result in an automatic rejection as these codes are mutually exclusive for the same procedure.
- Billing additional decompressive laminectomy codes is prohibited when N560 is claimed, as the decompression is considered inclusive to the tumor removal procedure.

- Ensure the surgical assistant and anaesthetist claim their respective N560B and N560C codes using the correct time-based unit calculations rather than a flat fee.
- Verify that any applicable anaesthesia extra units (e.g., E020C for emergency status) are appended correctly to the anaesthetist's claim to maximize reimbursement for complex cases.
