P008
P008 – Postnatal care in office
OHIP Plastic Surgery Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits
Postnatal care in office. This service may be eligible for the First visit after hospital discharge premium (E080) if specific criteria are met. The visit must be with the patient's primary care physician in their office or the patient's home within two weeks of discharge from an acute care hospital. See for full E080 criteria.
When to Use
- Use P008 for the routine 6-week postpartum assessment when the patient presents to your office for a physical examination and discussion of recovery.
- Use P008 for a focused postnatal visit addressing specific concerns such as wound healing, contraception, or mood screening if the patient is seen in the office setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not attempt to bill E080 with P008 for a standard vaginal or C-section delivery, as the E080 premium explicitly excludes routine obstetrical delivery admissions.
- Avoid billing P008 if you have already claimed a comprehensive assessment code or a different visit code for the same encounter, as P008 is intended for the specific postnatal assessment.
- Billing P008 for a visit occurring after the standard postpartum period may lead to claims being flagged if the clinical documentation does not support the 'postnatal' nature of the visit.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the visit date is clearly recorded to distinguish it from routine prenatal care (P007) or general office visits (A007), as P008 is specifically designated for the postnatal period.
- If the patient required an ICU admission during their delivery, document this clearly in the chart to support potential eligibility for E080, which is otherwise excluded for routine deliveries.
