P009 – Attendance at labour and delivery
OHIP Plastic Surgery Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits
Payable to a physician other than an obstetric consultant for attending labour and delivery when the physician either assists at vaginal delivery or surgery, gives anaesthetic at a caesarean section or operative delivery, or resuscitates the newborn.
When to Use
- Use P009 when you are a non-obstetrician physician (e.g., GP or family physician) providing neonatal resuscitation at a delivery where you are not the primary obstetrician.
- Use P009 when you are providing anesthesia services for a caesarean section or operative delivery as a non-anesthesiologist physician.
- Use P009 when you are assisting a primary obstetrician during a vaginal delivery or surgical delivery.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing P009 when you are the primary obstetrician or obstetric consultant; this code is strictly for the assisting or resuscitating physician.
- Attempting to bill P009 in conjunction with other delivery codes (like P006) for the same patient encounter, which will result in a rejection for duplicate service.
- Failing to document the specific role performed (e.g., neonatal resuscitation or surgical assistance), which is required to justify the claim during an audit.
Billing Tips
- Ensure you append the appropriate after-hours premium (E409 or E410) if the delivery commences during the specified time windows, as P009 is a qualifying procedure.
- If you are the only physician attending the delivery, verify if you should be billing a primary delivery code instead of P009, as P009 is intended for the secondary/assisting role.
