Oxytocin infusion for induction or augmentation of labour.
When to Use
- Use P023 when initiating a formal oxytocin drip to induce labour in a patient who has not yet entered the active phase.
- Use P023 when augmenting labour by administering oxytocin to correct hypotonic uterine dysfunction or stalled progress.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill P023 for the administration of oxytocin immediately following delivery, as this is considered part of the management of the third stage of labour and is included in the global delivery fee.
- Avoid billing P023 if the oxytocin infusion is managed entirely by nursing staff without the physician's direct involvement in the induction or augmentation process, as this may be flagged during an audit.
Billing Tips
- If you perform cervical ripening, ensure you bill P030 in conjunction with P023 to capture both components of the induction process, provided you have not billed a consultation or visit on the same day.
