P030 – Cervical ripening

Cervical ripening using topical, oral or mechanical agents. This service has a maximum of one per pregnancy and is payable in conjunction with P023 (Oxytocin infusion for induction or augmentation of labour).
When to Use
- Use P030 when applying mechanical agents like a Foley bulb or Cook catheter for induction of labour.
- Use P030 when administering pharmacological agents such as topical prostaglandins (e.g., Cervidil) or oral misoprostol to initiate cervical ripening.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing P030 more than once per pregnancy; the Schedule of Benefits strictly limits this code to a maximum of one occurrence per patient per pregnancy.
- Attempting to bill a consultation or office visit on the same day as P030, which will result in the visit being paid at nil per the K-section rules.
- Failing to recognize that P030 is a standalone procedural code and cannot be unbundled into multiple applications if the ripening process requires multiple doses or mechanical adjustments.
Billing Tips
- Ensure P030 is billed on the same claim as P023 if the induction proceeds to oxytocin infusion, as these are explicitly permitted to be billed in conjunction.
- Apply after-hours premiums (E409 or E410) to P030 if the ripening procedure is non-elective and commences within the designated premium time windows.
