P032 – Emergency cervical cerclage
OHIP Plastic Surgery Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits
P032 is an emergency surgical procedure for a cervical cerclage when the patient's external os is open to 2 cm or more and the membranes are visible or prolapsed. Any surgical technique may be used. Per the commentary on page of the Schedule of Benefits, if these specific criteria are not met, the service should be claimed using P031 for a prophylactic cervical cerclage. This service is eligible for surgeon (A), assistant (B), and anaesthetist (C) fees.
When to Use
- Use P032 when the patient presents with an external os dilated to 2 cm or more and membranes are visible or prolapsed, necessitating an emergency cerclage.
- If the patient does not meet the specific clinical criteria of 2 cm dilation or visible/prolapsed membranes, you must use P031 for a prophylactic cerclage instead.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing P032 for a prophylactic or elective cerclage is a common audit risk; ensure the 2 cm dilation and membrane status are clearly documented in the operative report.
- Failing to differentiate between P032 and P031 leads to claim rejections or recovery during post-payment audits if the clinical criteria for an emergency procedure are not supported by the record.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your operative note explicitly states the cervical dilation (≥2 cm) and the presence of visible or prolapsed membranes to substantiate the use of P032 over P031.
