When to Use
- Use P050 for the therapeutic drainage of excess amniotic fluid in cases of symptomatic polyhydramnios to alleviate maternal respiratory distress or preterm labor symptoms.
- Use P050 when performing an amnio-reduction to manage twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in a fetal medicine setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not attempt to bill a second assistant for P050, as it is not on the pre-approved list and will be rejected without prior individual consideration by a medical consultant.
- Avoid billing J149 if you have already billed J138 or J161 for the same patient on the same day, as J149 will be paid at nil.
Billing Tips
- Always pair P050 with J149 on the same claim to ensure the ultrasonic guidance component is captured, as these are explicitly payable together.
- If the procedure is performed on a patient aged 65 to 74, remember to apply the Z552 specialist premium to increase the total fee by 15%.
