P057
P057 – Fine needle fetal body cavity aspiration
OHIP Plastic Surgery Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits
Fine needle fetal body cavity aspiration from fetal abdomen, chest, heart, bladder and/or renal tract.
When to Use
- Use P057 for the therapeutic aspiration of fetal fluid collections, such as fetal ascites, pleural effusions, or obstructive uropathy (bladder/renal tract).
- Use P057 when performing a fine needle aspiration of a fetal body cavity under direct visualization for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill P057 with J138 or J161, as these are explicitly excluded when claiming the professional component of ultrasonic guidance.
- Avoid billing P057 as a standalone procedure without including J149 if ultrasonic guidance was utilized, as you are missing a payable professional component fee.
Billing Tips
- Always append J149 to your claim for P057 when you provide the clinical supervision and ultrasonic guidance yourself, as this is a separately payable professional component.
- Ensure that if you are performing multiple fetal procedures during the same session, you identify the major procedure to correctly calculate anaesthesia and assistant units, as P057 is not on the pre-approved list for a second assistant.
