Q310Q310

OHIP Critical Care Code · Schedule of Benefits

When to Use

  • Use Q310 when performing a formal assessment of a patient's smoking status, providing brief counseling, and documenting a cessation plan during an otherwise unrelated office visit.
  • Apply this code when the patient is a current smoker and you are initiating a structured discussion about quitting, distinct from a standard A007 or A001 assessment.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing Q310 on the same day as a K030 or K031 smoking cessation counseling visit will result in a rejection, as these are mutually exclusive.
  • Submitting Q310 without a corresponding diagnosis code for tobacco use (e.g., ICD-9 305.1) will lead to an automatic claim rejection.

Billing Tips

  • Q310 is a non-time-based incentive code that can be billed in addition to a standard office visit fee (A007) provided the counseling is documented as a distinct component of the encounter.
