Distal biceps tendon repair
When to Use
- Use R183 for the primary surgical repair of a distal biceps tendon rupture, including cases where the procedure necessitates the reduction and fixation of an associated bony avulsion.
- Select R183 when the surgical approach requires extensive mobilization of the muscle or tenolysis to achieve adequate tendon excursion for reattachment.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill separately for the reduction and fixation of bony injury or tenolysis, as these components are explicitly included in the R183 fee.
- Avoid billing R183 in conjunction with R184 for the same extremity, as these codes are mutually exclusive for the same surgical site.
Billing Tips
- If the repair is delayed beyond 6 weeks and necessitates a tendon graft, ensure you append E061 to R183 to capture the 50% premium for the graft procedure.
