Distal triceps tendon repair
When to Use
- Use R184 for the primary surgical repair of a distal triceps tendon rupture when the tendon can be reattached directly to the olecranon.
- Use R184 when the procedure involves necessary tenolysis or mobilization of the triceps muscle as part of the primary repair process.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R184 in conjunction with a separate procedure for bony fixation is a rejection risk, as reduction and fixation of bony injury are included in the R184 fee.
- Attempting to bill E061 for a standard acute repair is a common audit trigger; E061 is strictly reserved for delayed repairs (greater than 6 weeks) requiring graft augmentation.
Billing Tips
- If the repair is delayed beyond 6 weeks and requires an autograft or allograft, ensure E061 is billed as an add-on to R184 to capture the 50% premium for the increased complexity.
