R601 – Metacarpal phalangeal repair
OHIP Radiology Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Surgical repair of a metacarpal phalangeal ligament. This procedure is listed in the Musculoskeletal System section under Hand and Wrist reconstruction. The service fee for the surgeon is a flat rate, while fees for an assistant (suffix B) and anaesthetist (suffix C) are calculated based on basic units plus time units. This service is eligible for various age-based and after-hours premiums. See page for information on Nerve reconstruction.
When to Use
- Use R601 for the surgical repair of a torn or avulsed metacarpal phalangeal (MCP) ligament, such as a collateral ligament repair.
- Select R601 when performing an open repair of a chronic or acute MCP joint instability that requires ligamentous reconstruction or reattachment.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill R601 in conjunction with R321 or R322 for the same joint, as these codes represent different anatomical repairs and will trigger a duplicate or conflicting service rejection.
- Avoid billing R601 if the procedure is merely a closed reduction or simple immobilization, as this code specifically requires an open surgical repair.
Billing Tips
- If performing bilateral MCP repairs during the same session, ensure you apply the appropriate bilateral billing rules, noting that assistant and anaesthetist basic units are restricted to the major procedure only.
