R817
R817 – Open abdominal aortic repair including iliac and/or femoral arteries
OHIP Radiology Code — CARDIOVASCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for the surgical repair or excision of an abdominal aortic aneurysm using a graft, which also includes the repair of both common femoral arteries. For endovascular aneurysm repair, see services on page .
When to Use
- Use R817 for open surgical repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm involving graft placement that extends to include the common femoral arteries.
- Select R817 when the procedure is an open laparotomy approach, as opposed to endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) codes found in section Q13.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R817 in conjunction with separate femoral artery repair codes is considered unbundling, as the femoral repair is inclusive to this fee.
- Submitting R817 for endovascular procedures will result in rejection; ensure the operative report explicitly confirms an open approach.
Billing Tips
- Always append suffix B for the first assistant and suffix C for the anaesthetist to ensure the correct basic units are applied to the claim.
- If a second assistant is medically necessary, bill the service with the appropriate suffix; payment is eligible without prior authorization per GP90.
