Suture of intestine is a surgical procedure for repairing a perforation or laceration of the intestine. This service is eligible for surgeon (suffix A), assistant (suffix B), and anaesthetist (suffix C) fees. The fee for the assistant is based on 6 base units plus time units. The fee for the anaesthetist is based on 7 base units plus time units. An additional fee is listed for performing a choledochotomy in conjunction with this procedure (E721).
When to Use
- Use S184 for the primary repair of a traumatic or iatrogenic intestinal perforation or laceration.
- Use S184 when performing a simple enterorrhaphy, distinguishing it from S312 which is strictly reserved for the lysis of adhesions.

- Billing S184 in conjunction with S312 for the same site is often rejected; ensure the procedure is a true repair of the bowel wall rather than simple adhesiolysis.
