OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This surgical procedure involves the repair of a common bile duct stricture through dissection and/or resection. The service is eligible for payment to the surgeon (suffix A), with additional fees for assistant (suffix B) and anaesthesiologist (suffix C) services. - Surgeon (A): The fee is the amount listed in the Schedule. - Assistant (B): The fee is calculated using 7 base units plus time units. Time is calculated per 15-minute increment with increasing unit values after the first hour and after 2.5 hours (see ). - Anaesthetist (C): The fee is calculated using 10 base units plus time units. Time is calculated per 15-minute increment with increasing unit values after the first hour (see ). Note: For reconstruction, the Schedule advises to refer to billing code S281 as per .
When to Use
- Use S292 for the primary dissection or resection of a common bile duct stricture when no reconstruction is performed.
- Use this code for the surgical management of benign or malignant strictures where the primary objective is the removal of the stenotic segment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S292 in conjunction with S281 for the same operative session; S281 must be used if reconstruction is performed as part of the procedure.
- Failing to document the specific nature of the dissection or resection, which is required to justify the procedural fee over less invasive interventions.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that if reconstruction is required following the resection, you bill S281 instead of S292 to avoid claim rejection due to the explicit restriction note in the Schedule.
- Always verify the start and end times for the surgical assistant and anaesthetist, as these are calculated based on 15-minute increments and are critical for the total fee calculation.
