S299 – Distal pancreatectomy - body, tail with preservation of spleen
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A surgical procedure for the excision of the distal body and tail of the pancreas, with the preservation of the spleen. This procedure may or may not include creating an anastomosis (a surgical connection between structures). The service is eligible for surgeon (S299A), assistant (S299B), and anaesthesiologist (S299C) fees, which are calculated based on the listed surgical fee, basic units, and time units.
When to Use
- Use S299 when performing a distal pancreatectomy for benign or low-grade malignant lesions where the splenic vessels and spleen are successfully salvaged.
- Use S299 instead of S300 when the spleen is intentionally preserved, as S300 is specifically for distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S299 alongside S300 or S309 is a common error; only one primary pancreatectomy code is permitted per operative session.
- Failing to include the E709 add-on code when a cholecystectomy is performed concurrently results in missed revenue of $139.00.
- Attempting to bill for a second assistant without prior medical consultant authorization will result in an automatic rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly documents the preservation of the spleen to justify the use of S299 over the higher-valued S300.
