S326 – Inguinal and/or femoral hernia repair - children

This procedure is for the surgical repair (herniotomy) of an inguinal and/or femoral hernia. It is specifically for patients defined as a child, which according to the OHIP Schedule of Benefits (), is a person from 2 years up to and including 15 years of age. When to Use
- Use S326 for elective or non-elective inguinal or femoral herniotomy in patients aged 2 to 15 years inclusive.
- Use S326 instead of S322 when the patient has reached their second birthday, as S322 is strictly reserved for infants under 2 years of age.
- Use S326 instead of S323 when the patient is under 16 years of age, as S323 is restricted to patients 16 years and older.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S326 for a patient who has not yet reached their second birthday will result in an automatic rejection; use S322 for that age group.
- Failure to apply the 15% age premium for patients between 2 and 4 years of age is a common missed revenue opportunity for pediatric surgeons.
- Attempting to bill S326 for a patient 16 years or older will trigger a rejection; ensure the patient's age is verified against the date of service.
Billing Tips
- Always verify if the patient qualifies for the 15% age premium (patients aged 2 to 4) and ensure it is appended to the S326 claim.
- If performing a repair on a repeat recurrent hernia with more than two prior surgeries, ensure code E726 is billed alongside S326 to capture the additional flat fee.
