A complete cystectomy, which is the surgical removal of the urinary bladder. This procedure includes the creation of a ureteroileal conduit, where a segment of the ileum is used to create a passageway (conduit) for urine to be diverted from the ureters to an opening (stoma) on the abdomen.
When to Use
- Use S453 for a radical cystectomy that specifically includes the construction of an ileal conduit for urinary diversion.
- Use this code for bladder cancer cases requiring total cystectomy where the ureters are anastomosed to an isolated segment of the ileum.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S453 in combination with other urinary diversion procedures, as the conduit creation is inclusive to this code.
- Failure to append the E792 premium when the procedure is performed laparoscopically results in a significant underpayment of the 25% surgical fee increase.
