S484 – Cystectomy - complete, without transplant
OHIP Urology Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
S484 represents a complete cystectomy, which is the surgical removal of the entire urinary bladder. This procedure does not include a transplant or creation of a urinary diversion. It is distinct from related procedures such as cystectomy with ureterointestinal transplant (S485), ureteroileal conduit (S453), or continent urinary diversion (S440). This procedure can be performed laparoscopically, which allows for an additional 25% premium using E792.
When to Use
- Use S484 for a total cystectomy where no urinary diversion or reconstruction is performed during the same operative session.
- Select S484 when the procedure is strictly limited to the excision of the bladder, distinguishing it from S485, S453, or S440 which involve complex reconstruction or diversion.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S484 alongside S485 or S453 will result in a rejection for duplicate or overlapping services; ensure the claim reflects the specific surgical scope performed.
- Failing to append E792 when the procedure is performed laparoscopically results in a 25% underpayment of the surgical fee.
Billing Tips
- Always verify if the procedure meets the criteria for E792 to capture the 25% laparoscopic premium, as this is not automatically applied by the system.
